Currency in Factions?
I was chatting with a Guild mate about currency in Factions, he is of the opinion that the gold/currency in Cantha will be of a different type to that in the first Chapter. I however believe it will be the same - I haven't seen anyone speak about this yet (I did a quick search and can't find anything on the official site either) - what are your thoughts on this?
I can see benefits and downfalls for it being either way...

I think someone started a rumor at one point that it will be different but I think its all the same since Cantha is part of the same world.

My Opinion - New Currency
I think it will be a new currency. It seems that most ppl are finished the game now and have taken to farming to increase their net worth, just go into any city and you will see more farming groups forming than quest groups. So based on that there will be a lot of $ floating around from now until factions release.
They are trying to promote Factions as a stand alone game, so you don't have to own the original Guild Wars to enjoy it. So why would they use the old currency? Would you be interested in joining an online RPG for the first time if 98% of the ppl playing have had a 9 month period to save up a whack of gold while you're starting out and have 70g in storage?
Players with money will pay anything for something that is unique for their character. Just look at the ogre slaying knife that is essentially useless but can still be sold for 20-40k depending on the boldness of the seller. As soon as current GW players jump into factions they will start buying up everything they can for new looking weapon which will in turn make the prices sky rocket.
So then, what chance does a noob have to get going in the game when they have 200g to spend on a new sword/bow/staff when most other people will be willing to pay 10k because its "unique"? Having that much cash injected into a game with a real economy would be a mess.
So, merely my opinion. What does everyone else think??

Well, if there is new currency, players with "linked" accounts with have two different currencies (4 if you include plat and gold seperate). This is because the account is able to go to both Canta and Tyria. So I believe that they will stick with the gold/plat system because it would be a heck of a lot easier to make both games transition better.

I asked Gaile a while ago about change of currency in Cantha. Gaile's answer to me was something like she was fairly certain that the currency would remain the same, gold is a good currency, but that it was a good question and she'd ask about it. So I waited till the next time she came, and I asked her about it again, and she said a pretty plain no. Gold is gonna be the currency, unless the devs have miraculously changed their mind. End of story.

Well I guess that pretty much wraps up that thread. However, I am more interested in hearing people's thoughts on it instead of yes and no anwers.....

If there was a possibility, I probably would say yes to a change of currency. A change of currency with an exchange rate with gold. Since Cantha is supposed to be a very trading nation, they should have more things of higher value, so the currency needs to be of higher value. It could be like 1 new currency to 100 gold or something like that, but in the new currency things cost larger amounts so it's a big move up. It would make sure nobody's too rich, but it would still keep the old rich'uns happy as they have more than everybody else. You have to make a good balance or people really wouldn't like it.
However, from Gaile's response to me I remain pretty certain it's not going to happen. Would have been nice, but Anet thought otherwise.

I don't want it to be like Euro and Dollar, for me gold and platnum is fine if new currency was introduced it would just waste people time

Think like this. New world possibly new sets of profession armor, etc. Which means one giant gold sink. (Temporary for the most part)

I think if they had a different currency, then the laws of economics would take over pretty quickly. An exchange rate would go into effect that fluctuated based on supply of the relative currencies- as most people who are doing PvE gravitate to Factions, the supply of gold would go down (or increase at a slower rate), items would become less expensive in gold, more so in new currency (inflation). You see this a bit now, with ectos functioning as a secondary currency. The exchange rate on ectos (price) being a function of their supply vs. regular gold. When the supply of ectos goes up faster than the general money supply (hoarders sell, drops increase), the price goes down.
It seems simpler to me to just keep gold- people with access to both areas would end up figuring a way to leverage their wealth in the old world into Cantha items anyway. And I doubt that Anet wants to deal with multiple currencies anyway.

My thoughts on the seperate currancies, and the idea that it is unfair to those who start out to let those who have saved up cash to buy everything in Factions ASAP is that they should have the same currency.
Think of it this way. If someone buys Guild Wars today (God forbid that should ever happen!) they're joining up a game that has been out for quite some time now. So shouldn't everyone get the amount of gold they have reset, because there's a new person playing, and it's unfair to them that they have to start out with a small amount of gold?
What I'm trying to say here is that someone buying Factions isn't going to be at any more of a disadvantage than if they went out and bought Guild Wars today, and started playing that. Yes, some people always will have more money than others. That's how life works. If they put in a new currancy for each new expansion, then soon opening up your inventory will take up most of your screen. Two for Prophecies, two for Factions, two for Ch 3... It adds up, in a most serious fashon. Then you've got exchange rates, and they'll probably scale those like they do Rune Dealers or whatnot. And while it's a nice, more realistic touch to put into the game, it's going to make it harder for them to make the rest of the game good, because they'll be concentrating on keeping that working. One worldwide currancy isn't going to mean the end of the game.

well you can always delete your account and start a new one, then you have your own account reset, maybe the rest will follow
Why would they change currency? just to irritate the ppl who already played their game? doesn't seem logic.

you don't get it obviously... betas are just that betas... in past betas the new characters that we created for the beta were reset to 0 in that campaign when it went live. thus the extra day advance access thing... So what this mean is people will blow their gold on stuff during the beta and wamo those uber assassins with the max armors and Sai will be back to Campaign tutorial with Nadda. Bwahahahahaa...
personally I will play the beta and enjoy it, but not spending a crap load of gold in it. If I find something Cool.. but not going to bother wasting resources on beta items that may or may not be wiped once it goes live.

It would be funny:- lets say Chapter 5 for example -we would have different currency for each chapter. Wouldnt that be very confusing?
I am sure it will stay as it is now.
